6 Common Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

During the year 2020, many people started tackling different renovation and decoration projects they have been putting off for too long. Some have given their walls a fresh color, others have changed the upholstery on their furniture, and some just made a few changes here and there.

However, just because winter is here does not mean that you should stop thinking about redecorating. Do not let the bad weather stop you! There are many home improvement projects to tackle during the coronavirus quarantine, even during the winter. But, what you should be thinking about are common decorating mistakes and how to avoid them. That is the only way to save yourself a lot of time, energy, and money. It is also the best way to ensure you have a pleasant decorating experience! So, without further ado, here are six common decorating mistakes to avoid.

Do Not Opt For Style Over Comfort

We can all agree that furniture stores are now full of appealing pieces. But, in most cases, those attractive pieces of furniture do not only come with hefty price tags but also with a dose of discomfort. Still, people buy them because they are trendy, modern, and popular, and that is the biggest mistake you can make when buying furniture. You will soon see that that appealing but uncomfortable sofa is impossible to sit on. What is the point of purchasing something stylish and easy on the eyes if you cannot use it? Thus, do yourself a favor and never opt for style over comfort when decorating your home. The place you live must, above all, be snug as a bug in the rug.

We spend a lot of our time at home, so it is a good idea to make it cozy.

Do Not Color Your Walls First

When it comes to redecorating homes, you must always follow the golden rule – never color your walls first. Do everything else, and then color your walls last! It is preferable to match your furniture and all the knick-knacks you have in your home with your walls. If you do not, everything will look like one big, hot, mismatched mess. So, before you start painting, consider the pattern and color of your large pieces of furniture and try to see which wall color will fit the rest of the room.

However, just because you should paint the walls last does not mean that you should leave all that furniture there. Removing paint from it can easily turn into a nightmare. Thus, once you have decided which color works best with the rest of the furniture, take it out of the room. Just be sure you gather some quality materials to protect your belongings while they are in a storage unit or your garage, basement, or attic.

Do Not Neglect the Lighting

If you want to change up your home’s style but don’t know what to focus on, take a look at your lighting fixtures. If you have not changed them in a while, chances are that they are outdated. Yellowed or cracked fixtures can make even the most beautiful room look bad, so this would be the perfect place to start. Find somebody who understands how lightning works, who deals with home repairs, and who can familiarize you with different styles and options.

Never underestimate the power of lightning in a home, as it can make or break the ambiance you are trying to achieve. So, if you have some money on the side and you really want to redecorate something in your home, change your lighting. You will be surprised how making this change can make your home look entirely different.

Keep in mind that lighting plays a significant role in any home.

Do Not Choose Too Short Nor Too Long Curtains

If you want to change the look of your room, whether it is a living room, a dining room, or a bedroom, the easiest way to do that is by changing the curtains. However, it is with curtains that people often make the biggest mistake. Namely, if you choose the curtains that are too short, your entire room will end up looking disproportionate. And if your curtains are too long, they will make the space feel too small. No matter what you do with curtains that are too short or too long, they will never fit in with the rest of the room. So, if you decide to change the curtains, grab your measuring tape, and measure everything. Your curtains should be as long as your windows.

Do Not Choose Small Rugs

Does your room look odd? If it does, it may be because the rug is just too small. This is a very common decorating mistake, but luckily, it is easy to fix. Simply buy a rug that either covers your entire room or the one that ensures that all the larger furniture is sitting on it.

If you have trouble moving your furniture around, make sure to ask local experts for help. They can help you move furniture to where you want it, either to another room or to a storage area. That way, you will be able to experiment with rugs without worrying about moving injuries and back pain.

Do Not Be Afraid to Experiment With the Layouts

Last but certainly not the least common mistake people make while decorating is being afraid to experiment with layouts. Just because a particular arrangement was imposed by the previous owners or was there when you moved in does not mean that you have to stick with it. Play with your layouts, and move furniture around until you find one that works best for you. Try to make it more visually appealing, more comfortable, and simply more practical. By changing the room layout, you can even modernize your outdated home. However, do not stop with furniture; you can also change up the purpose of the rooms. For instance, if you spend more time in the living room than in the dining room (which is bigger), see if switching them is a better solution.
